“The Danger of Debt”

“Just as the rich rule the poor, so the borrower is slave to the lender.” (Proverbs 22:7)

If you have a home mortgage, a car note, student loan, credit card debt or any other form of consumer debt you know firsthand the truth of this verse.  Debt is normal in our society, and “normal” means broke.  Debt is not a sin, nor is it prohibited for the believer; however, lifelong debt should not be normal for a Christian.  Whenever debt is mentioned in the bible it’s always mentioned in the negative.  It’s never encouraged.  God’s word is the ultimate financial textbook because its Author is the ultimate Financial Planner.  God knows if you regularly borrow money i.e., make it a way of life you will spend your life in financial bondage.  God’s word does not change.  His principles are as applicable today as when they were written.  It’s never too late to begin applying God’s word to your personal finances.  As my good friend Dave Ramsey always says, “Debt is dumb”.  What would life look like if you had no mortgage, no car payments how generous could you be?  God wants you to be free...to serve Him.
